It’s people like Mr. Beatnick that make you want to give major respect for reviving classic material. The 12″ takes a crack at Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” as a reconstruction, stripping it down to its bare elements and then slowly rebuilding it with guitar riffs as Marvin soulfully croons and scats. On the flip side you’ve got “Tribute To Diamond D” which should be reminiscent if you’ve been on the Busta Rhymes tip with “New York Shit”, Diamond D’s “I Went For Mine” or if you’re really keen on the sample sources, The Soul Sensation Orchestra’s “Faded Lady”. “Tribute To Diamond D” re-loops, re-stutters and re-grooves the sounds mentioned above and tags some added flute work from Ben Hadwen giving it an old school break beat feel. Kudos for the first volume of Shhh Edits! What will Mr. Beatnick come up with next?
